Cross Country
Congratulations to Lizzie Edumunds and Phoebe Downes from year 7 who made it through to the next round of the cross country. The district trials took place on a very cold and frosty Saturday morning at Abington Park in January. The Year 7 girl’s race was first and there were over 60 competitors. Lizzie and Phoebe ran extremely well and stayed near the front for the whole race finishing 9th and 14th. Well done to both of the girls for making it through to the next round to represent the county on Saturday 4th in Ipswich. Let’s hope the weather is a bit warmer girls !

Dear Parent or Carer

Nightingale House Mufti Day

As part of Wollaston School’s traditions, each member of the house who has won the previous term’s house point competition is invited to take part in a mufti day. Your child, as a member of Nightingale house, is therefore invited to take part in a free mufti day on Friday 13 January to celebrate their house’s winning of the first term’s house point competition.

Nightingale won the Autumn term’s competition with a staggering 11,217 house points collected, and your child contributed to their winning.

On mufti days students are not required to wear uniform, however, we would suggest that as it is likely to be cold and possibly wet that students make sure they dress appropriately!

Congratulations to all Nightingale students.

Yours sincerely,
Mr. D Lyon
Acting Deputy Headteacher

Music Department News

On Monday 12th December the Music Department presented their annual Christmas Celebration of vocal and instrumental music. Approximately 100 students took part in a whole range of ensembles. Groups over the last couple of years have been expanding in both numbers of students participating as well as the diversity of style and content of material that the groups perform.

This year we opened with the Year 7 singers who have been preparing songs in their normal music lessons and they began the concert with Jingle Bell Rock. Over the following two hours we heard from the Brass Ensemble, Clarinet Group, String Orchestra, Concert Band, Big Band, Trad Band, Samba Drummers, African Drummers, Orchestra, String Trio, Vocalise and Cantabile singing ensembles, Junior Singers, Barbershop and Wollaston Singers all performing a mix of Christmas and other music.

Audience members passed on their congratulations for the talent, effort and hard work on display at this event and we thank them for taking the time to support us in our concert. Money raised from this event goes towards helping to fund these additional activities such as purchasing music for groups and providing free transport to events so all the money raised is gratefully received.

A huge amount of time and effort goes into preparing for these concerts and the students and staff involved all freely give up lunchtimes and after-school time to be able to put on such a varied programme. And this event is not the end of extra-curricular work for the Music Department this academic year. In January (Monday 30th) we are hosting a KS4 and 5 Showcase where GCSE, AS and A level students will be presenting some of their course performances and then in April we will be joining with the Drama and Dance departments to stage a Performing Arts Showcase (more details to follow).

Monday, 5th December saw the return of the annual Christmas Hamper competition. Once again, forms outdid themselves and produced amazing hampers, designed, created and filled by students from years 7 to 13, which were then judged by two representatives from the Salvation Army. Although there were winners chosen for each year group the overall winner was 9BWN, whose house completed with elves and fairy lights caught the attention of the judges who were very impressed with the form’s efforts.

At the end of the judging the hampers are always donated to the Salvation Army who distribute them to elderly members of the local community who need support during the festive period.
