The School Curriculum
The academic work of the school is the responsibility of ten Teaching and Learning Directors, each of whom is responsible to the Headteacher for a particular curriculum area. The following arrangements are being pursued at present, but are subject to change in later years. The school, along with all other maintained schools, is following the National Curriculum in accordance with the requirements of Government.
Key Stage 3 Curriculum (Years 7, 8 & 9)
The Key Stage 3 curriculum aims to build on the work of our Primary Schools whilst meeting statutory requirements. It is a broad and balanced experience, including Mathematics, English, Science, Humanities (History/Ethics & Philosophy, Geography/Citizenship), Design Technology, Art and Music, Information & Communication Technology, Modern Languages (French/German), Physical Education and Performing Arts (Dance/Music/Drama). All students will also take Personal and Social Education, attend assemblies and enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
Year 10 Key Stage 4 Curriculum (Years 10 and 11)
In Years 10 and 11, all pupils will continue to follow the core curriculum of subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Ethics & Philosophy and PE. In Year 10, following an opportunity to select particular pathways, students study a curriculum that reflects particular academic or vocational study strengths and interests.
Most courses will lead to examination qualifications in the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), but there are also opportunities to follow BTEC and other vocational options.
Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13)
We operate an “open access” policy towards the sixth form: all students may apply for admission providing that they follow a course, which is of benefit to them, and that they are prepared to work hard. The following courses are currently available:
- A one-year BTEC level two course in Leisure Studies, during which students study a number of practically-based modules designed to give greater knowledge and understanding of a chosen vocational area.
- A two-year course studying usually four subjects at General Certificate of Education Advanced level. These courses are only available to those with a grade B or above at GCSE in a related subject. Students also require a minimum number of good passes (A* – C), including English and Mathematics at GCSE.
