Jane Austen is one of England’s most widely read novelists, best known for her works such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility which have all been adapted for films and TV series. Importantly, she was one of the first popular female novelists and predominantly wrote about the need for women of her social class to marry ‘well’ during the 18th century.
Although Austen did not receive much recognition or praise for her writing whilst she was alive, by the 1940s she was widely recognised as one of England’s finest writers, and has inspired many a literary piece of work.

The second female inspiration for our houses, Florence Nightingale, is famous for her courageous work as a nurse during the Crimean War. Known as “The Lady with the lamp” she worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of wounded soldiers during the conflict. Upon her return to the United Kingdom after the war, she set up the first nursing school at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London and campaigned to improve standards in civilian and military hospitals. To this day, International Nurses Day – held on the anniversary of Nightingale’s birth, 12 May – celebrates nurses all over the world.
